Elizabeth Warren-Boulton

My goal is to capture the essence of nature’s grace and beauty in my colorful semi-abstract images. These mixed media paintings incorporate oil, acrylic, ink, metallic leaf, and glitter on sheet copper or canvas. The foundation of each work is built by developing layers of paint on canvas or oxidized texture on copper, resulting in unique and varied visual effects. For the core composition, I work directly from nature, using preliminary drawings and color notes to capture the fleeting characteristics of flowers and foliage. My passion is to incorporate strong linear aspects of drawing into the painted elements.

The often luminescent negative space in my work evolves in response to the placement of images and the segmented treatment of the ground. The textured surfaces and metallic leaf cause light to play about the finished work to capture the movement of light in nature and represent the beauty of its simplest forms.

I am particularly inspired by the work of Japanese masters from the Edo period such as Ogata Korin and Sakai Hoitsu who created such elegant masterpieces often depicting the change of seasons. I also find the work of Henri Matisse and contemporary artists Stephen Quiller and Robert Kushner very stimulating through their use of color, design, and line.
